The Scent of Your Home
Have you ever noticed what happens when you open the door and walk into a home, even yours? You take a deep breath and smell. The human sense of smell has extraordinary capacities for discrimination. Cleaning concoctions are not the odor or scent I want people remembering about my home. What about you?
Real Estate Agents astute in the way of selling homes have used candles and arousal sprays with apple and vanilla scents in the kitchen to evoke the fond memory of favorite food. Scientists state that the human nose can detect over 1,000 different scents. Perhaps this is why we have so many colognes and perfumes? The person known as a sniffer in a perfume factory gets higher pay for his or her sniffing ability and who wouldn't like that job! But how many of us actually realize how much we actually use the sense of smell?
Our scents help us find food, avoiding predators and choose a mate. The sense of smell evokes memories of past experience. In my grandparents’ days, folks would “make a memory” by associating a particular smells with a person. So, if grandma always smelled of Peppermint, she would be remembered whenever her family smelled Peppermint. It was sure a better scent than old socks or bottles of medicine that smell up cabinets!
When you decorate the scent of the room should also be considered. The kitchen could always smell of fresh baked apple pie, vanilla donuts, or hot chocolate. The living room with a hearth could smell like pine trees. The bathroom could smell of lemon or oranges. The bedroom should be calming with the oils of lavender, marjoram, geranium, mandarin, cardamom or a floral spray of roses. There are many books on the subject of Aroma Therapy and the benefits it has on ones health and happiness and scientific studies have shown that fragrance technology is capable to elicit relaxation, exhilaration, sensuality, happiness and well-being.
Because of the importance odors or scents play in our body, it is an important consideration for every decorator to consider when building decoration into a room in the home. Scents stimulate our olfactory [nasal] pathways to produce emotions. Don’t forget to consider the air inside your car as well! I suppose you would prefer a calm and relaxing drive and less stress, “easy does it” emotions. We all want and need aromatic smells to evoke positive and happy emotions in our homes. Don’t we?

Planning to Decorate or Redecorate?

Things you need to ponder when decorating include:
1] Space is self-explanatory and can be solved with measurement. Space starts at the floor and goes to the ceiling. It’s your home and you need to make it a place of harmony for yourself and your family. 2} Themes are versatile color assortments on walls, floors, wall decor, accent tables, and other furnishing that makes up each room. Like a painting, room themes can be Casual, Western, Formal, Colonial, Traditional, Medieval, Contemporary, etc. The Colonial, Medieval and Western themes reflect old fashion charm with a sense of history. These themes can usually be found in historic buildings. Contemporary, formal and traditional themes reflect ordinary life and can be found in most new homes. Visiting new homes or furniture stores are a good place to pick up great ideas for decoration.
3] Color schemes are very important to the decoration of your home because colors separate and emphasis different features in every room. When contrasting colors, you can make places in your home stand out because colors are affected by their neighboring colors. Same or similar colors melt into each other blending colors to conceal or disguise items. That ugly old drape seems to disappear with similar neighboring color. Once it is hidden, a bold colored accent table with an interesting light can be introduced. Make your decor more pleasant for the discerning eye. Pale colors make large or tiny rooms look larger than they are. Bold colors move things closer making a large or tiny room seem smaller. Unequal is usually more interesting to look at but remember colors are affected by their neighbor and only one color should be the dominate in each room.
4] Patterns can be bold, pale, cool, warm, equal or unequal. Mismatching patterns will not make your home well received or comfortable. Check the pattern wheels to see what colors are cool or warm. Pale background colors are enhanced with bold accents. Typical background shades should be subtle cool, pale colors. Coolness tones come from water and trees. White is the universal pale color to enhance room size. It is also the usual canvas how a painting begins. Warmth tones come from the colors of fire and earth. Bold accents add warmth to the room by proper use of light fixtures, sofa, bed, accent tables, and other accessories in each room. The ceiling and the floor pattern must also be considered in your planning.
Decorating can be a lot of fun but it is also hard work and proper planning is essential. Consider your space, lighting, floor type and color, background walls, window treatments, wiring placement, furniture arrangement and color schemes for each room. Giving a gentle greeting and making each room a pleasure to enter will help make your home the castle you deserve.

Decorate with Feng Shui in Mind
Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice that still exists today. Decorators learned to make furniture arrangements in the home to balance that of the Feng-shui using compass correlations between humans and the universe. The goal of Feng Shui is to take advantage of vital Qi (life force) when building structures The rules state that homes should face south and sit on the north south solar axis, To determine this, builders looked at the heaven (astrology) round and the earth (geometry) square to make their calculations. Chinese builders bisected the angle between the directions of the rising and setting sun to find North (Winter solstice) symbolized by the Dark Turtle. Builders stressed the importance of the buildings alignment with Yin-Yang force fields of water, wood, fire, earth or soil, and metal. They also considered the quality of the local environment including the effects of time, space, and weather when designing the external and internal sections of the home. So Feng Shui speaks to magic, mystery, and order in human life.
According to Wikepedia, "Chinese Religious persons of importance do not agree with the generalized use of Feng Shui with regards to the decorations of homes in the West. 'Robert T. Carroll sums up what feng shui has become in some cases: … feng shui has become an aspect of interior decorating in the Western world and alleged masters of feng shui now hire themselves out for hefty sums to tell people such as Donald Trump which way his doors and other things should hang.'Feng shui has also become another New Age "energy" scam with arrays of metaphysical products … offered for sale to help you improve your health, maximize your potential, and guarantee fulfillment of some fortune cookie philosophy…” Wikepedia also mentions: “Landscape ecologists find traditional feng shui an interesting study. In many cases, the only remaining patches of old forest in Asia are "feng shui woods," often associated with cultural heritage, historical continuity, and the preservation of species. Some researchers interpret the presence of these woods as indicators that the "healthy homes," sustainability and environmental components of ancient Feng Shui should not be easily dismissed.”
Thus, Feng Shui remains an element of some importance to many. Specialist suggest that waterfalls, candles, and harmonous sounds add to the Feng Shui of the home. Notable builders produce homes with windows facing North, decorators suggest mirrors to greet one’s friends and one self should hang near the front door so one is greeted by themselves when entering the home and feel welcome. There is suggestions that pleasant sounds of runing water make folkd relax. Others suggest that aromatic smells are suitable to cause love, harmony and peace within the home as they have for those folks centuries in the past.
